An art concept has been developed for the WBoston Hotel which is now under construction. The concept intends to strengthen the identity of the Hotel and its location and to root it in perception. It is entitled: A Vision of Ponds and Forests.

The goal of the concept is to counteract anonymity. The anonymity of the location is suppressed by strengthening the identity. A world is created based on the myths of New England. The anonymity of the room is neutralized by creating uniqueness and a feeling of personal security. The anonymity of the guest is alleviated by giving guests and personnel a point of reference and a collective experience. The vision of ponds and forests is based on the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson: “A lake is the landscape’s most beautiful and expressive feature. It is earth’s eye looking into which the beholder measures the depth of his own nature. The trees are a standing night and every fir and spruce which you fell is a plume plucked from night’s raven wing.”
The Perception of the concept should arouse associations – about what is seen, what is dreamt and what has been long forgotten. The associations make us aware of our profundities. In addition to that there is a decorative message. Decoration enriches us and enhances our environment. The hotel is enhanced thanks to a constant perception of aesthetics. The rooms are enhanced thanks to the unique individual atmosphere. The stay is enhanced thanks to participation in this aesthetic experience.
There are three basic parts of the concept. First unique pictures in guest rooms. The pictures are a series that form a whole. The sequence of pictures follows a special system. Second an overview of all pictures is available in an animated screen show. The screen show can be viewed by all guests. And third there is a system of color coding. The color codes are an extract from the pictures. They perform various duties in the hotel.

This is the system that the pictures are organized in: In part of the hotel the pictures are based on ponds. The horizontal axis is the ruling principle here. In another part of the hotel the pictures are based on forests. The vertical axis is the ruling principle here.

All pictures are made up of 4 colors. The 4 colors all come from the 10 color scale. Pictures go with the pictures next to them through use of the same colors. This creates a feeling of proximity. A picture is different from the picture in the next room through a different rhythm to the colors. This creates a feeling of individuality. Proximity entails: Where is the room? Individuality entails: What is the room like? Together they create an identity. Identity enhances the guest’s stay. He gets more than just a place to spend the night. He feels at home.

On the next floor one of the 4 colors is taken out and exchanged for another. A new color code is created. The color codes could have the following functions: Support for the administration and organization of the hotel, i.e.: allocation of key cards. Guidance system for orientation purposes, for maps, in stairwells, elevators, mailboxes. Room decoration, on stationary, pillows, towels, hangers, key cards, etc.

An overview of the entire picture series can be viewed in a screen show. The screen show could be installed in a central location, such as the lobby. The show can be presented on a series of screens that are on a timer. The screen show could also be interactive – so that guests can see pictures from certain rooms on demand. And finally the screen show could be offered on the televisions in the rooms and also by internet.
The concept allows for the option of having pictures outside the guest rooms. Pictures could hang in the lobby, in the restaurant, in the breakfast room or in the hallways. These pictures have more than 4 colors and in fact use widely the 10 color scale. In the rooms, the limitation to 4 colors is more like “chamber music”. Outside of the rooms, the pictures can be more richly “orchestral”.

Here are some further ideas: When guests book online, they could choose their room based on the picture. A brochure in the room could alert the guest to the uniqueness of his room. Equipment such as place settings or menu cards could be part of the concept.
